The Alternative Blog

It’s our favourite time of year, as we get to celebrate our love for one of nature’s finest fibres; wool. Renowned for its superb natural qualities such as warmth, durability and beautiful tactility, it’s no surprise that the appeal for wool shows no signs of fading.

This October, we’re shining a spotlight on our partnership with the Campaign for Wool, the wonders of this natural fibre and our inspiring new wool collections, where sustainable production and skilled craftsmanship remain key.

About Our Wool

Here at Alternative Flooring, we’re proud to share that our wool comes from sheep, providing a soft, renewable fibre which is spun into yarn, before being woven or tufted in a cosy, durable floor covering ready to be laid in your home.

Beyond aesthetics, wool carpets, rugs and runners offer ultimate comfort underfoot, as well as a host of natural benefits that make this versatile fibre even easier to love:

  • Naturally kind to the environment, the 100% wool fibre is organic, biodegradable and a renewable resource which blends practicality with premium quality.
  • Wool is perfectly suited to both modern and traditional interiors, offering natural insulation, noise softening and durability.
  • Perfect for busy households, wool is surprisingly easy to spot clean making it a practical choice for the home.
  • A majority of our wool carpets are treated to deter moths, helping to avoid the risk of deterioration of the wool’s natural fibres.
  • Ideal for higher footfall areas, wool fibres have a natural bounce-back ability which allows them to recover after pressure, meaning carpets, rugs and runners can maintain their shape and appearance for a longer period of time.

Our Wool Month Edit

New in

Our newest collections  include Wool Connection, Wool Hush and Wool Calm.

Wool Connection is a collection of four handwoven, 100% wool fibre designs known as Field, Furrow, Reed and Willow, available in three nature-inspired colourways: Forest, Sky and Earth. Each unique pattern is designed to work seamlessly together, connecting spaces in your home, bringing both warmth and character.

Wool Hush is a soft, elegant carpet, crafted using 100% wool fibres. The textured wool construction adds an abundance of character, while remaining beautifully easy to live with.

Wool Calm is a tactile tufted loop wool carpet also made using 100% wool fibre. Inspired by layers of textures found within nature to create an earthy, comforting feeling underfoot.

Longstanding favourites

We’ve dipped into our extensive collection of British wool carpets, rugs and runners to highlight some of our favourites from over the years.

One of our most luxurious designs is the Wool Chunky Knit, a wonderfully tactile, chunky loop carpet inspired by the plush texture of oversized knitted textiles, Purl, Bobble and Cable Knit. Crafted for a luxurious underfoot experience, its generous loops bring a soft, inviting feel to the home, with plenty of texture and character.

Now part of our take-back scheme the collection can begin a new chapter beyond the home. A new innovative separation process allows the wool fibre to be separated from the recycled polyester felt backing, both are cleaned separately before moving onto their next life. The recycled polyester backing can be reused to make new carpet backings and the wool cloth is repurposed for planting grass seeds within it, helping to establish grass growth in dry or barren areas. A natural choice for interiors today, with the next chapter already in mind.

Also inspired by the beauty of nature, Wool Riverbed is a tufted loop wool carpet crafted using 100% undyed wool fibre inspired by the layered textures found within nature.  Both designs are available in five tranquil shades.

A design that can’t be missed is the Wool Candy Stripe. Designed for modern living, this collection offers three distinct stripes: Cane, Lollipop and Pinwheel. Each brings its own take on the classic stripe, combining a soft, inviting feel with uplifting colour combinations that add a cheerful touch and make a room pop. Proving that wool doesn’t have to be all about neutral tones, Wool Candy Stripe showcases just how playful and versatile this natural fibre can be.
