The Alternative Blog

As temperatures dip and nights become darker, the throws come out, cushions change and we start to slow down and enjoy the change in season. With that comes warmer interiors, layered textures and organic materials. This autumn however, our interiors are more considered; where a shift in colour palette feels more of a natural transition than a complete redirection. At Alternative Flooring we welcome change and trends but with a little more direction behind them. Discover how you can make your home feel intentionally cosier with simple swaps to last a lifetime.

How to make a home feel cosier without completely re-decorating?

Don’t overlook rugs and runners as accessories that can completely transform a room. From colour to texture, there are so many options to choose from depending on the current set-up and what the room is in need of. Either on top of hard floors or beautifully layered over existing carpets, rugs and runners, as a new addition to the home, once styled, will feel as if they were already there.

Going bespoke is a great way to create a design that’s cohesive with the rest of the interiors yet acts as a transitional piece, adding warmth and an abundance of texture. Chocolate browns, deep burgundies or rich greens can feel full of character, liveable, but just the switch-up you may need for your autumnal palette.

What carpet colours make a room feel warmer?

Natural carpet fibres can be particularly effective at creating a warmer feel not only underfoot but throughout the room too. Natural materials such as sisal, jute and wool, naturally offer warm, earthy tones to bring a sense of depth to a space. This autumn, reconnect with nature by introducing a soothing palette of muted, earthy tones to create a calming ambiance that’s both tranquil and warm. From soft sandy shades to honey hues and rich browns, you’ll find that natural carpets, rugs or runners provide a timeless foundation that can work beautifully across contemporary and traditional interiors.

What flooring can withstand muddy boots and everyday comings and goings?

With the change of season come muddy boots, wet paws, and plenty of comings and goings, so choosing flooring that can stand up to everyday life is just as important as choosing a style you’ll love.

Natural fibres such as sisal are naturally hardwearing, making them a popular choice for busy areas of the home, including the hallway and stairs. Their textured weaves are designed to withstand everyday footfall while adding warmth and character underfoot. However, natural fibres at times can be less forgiving when it comes to spills and moisture, so they may not be the right choice for every household.

Faux fibre carpets such as our Anywhere collections are a great alternative where the occasional spill occurs or where moisture is more present, while still offering the beautiful texture and appearance of natural flooring. For spaces with plenty of everyday activity and muddy paws, they can also be a great choice. The key is to consider how you will use each space and whether it’s spill- and moisture-free.

How can the hallway become warmer and more welcoming?

Rather than just a pass-through, entryways, hallways and boot rooms are becoming more curated. Take inspiration from welcoming boutique hotels, introducing layered lighting, moodier palettes, rich textures and soft, tactile flooring to create a warmer and more inviting feel. Embracing both style and functionality, the perfect entryway does more than house muddy boots and coats, it signals the overall tone of the home.

Bespoke hallway runners, rugs or patterned carpets are a great way to add warmth, texture and personality while zoning this area. This transforms the hallway from a purely functional space into the new heart of the home.

What flooring is best for keeping the cold out in autumn and winter?

Wool is so much more than just a cosy carpet fibre. Thanks to its unique, natural structure, it helps regulate temperatures throughout the year. Tiny pockets within each fibre trap air to provide excellent insulation in the colder months, ideal for when the temperature drops. Beautiful, durable and naturally resilient, wool is just at home in busy hallways and on staircases as it is in relaxing bedrooms or home offices. As a rug over draughty floorboards or a fully fitted carpet, it’s a timeless choice that combines everyday practicality with natural comfort.

Autumn might inspire us to rethink how our homes feel, but choosing new flooring is a design choice that should last far beyond the season. Before making a decision, ask yourself how you want your home to feel, what qualities are important, question your lifestyle and what will make the best fit and whether the colours and textures will work in your home as it continues to evolve.
