Why buy a wool rug?

Sheep’s wool has been used as a textile fibre since the Stone Age. The fact that in all that time human ingenuity hasn’t been able to get close to replicating wools' unique natural properties just shows how much this wonder fibre can stand the test of time! Wool rugs are definitely considered a great material when it comes to rugs. Wool rugs are springy, durable and inherently flame-retardant, not to mention fantastic natural insulators of warmth. When it comes to our beautiful wool rugs at Alternative Flooring, the magic is in the blend using only the best fibres sourced from around the World. We also mix our rug wool with other natural fibres to help bring a texture and design to your floor.

Design your own wool rug

Use our online Make Me A Rug design tool now and create a made to measure, bespoke wool rug for your space. We even have exclusive designer ranges from Ben Pentreath, Margo Selby and Divine Savages to choose from. Your rug, your way.

How to store a wool rug

If you’re looking to store your large wool rug away, then you want to make sure no damage comes to it. There are plenty of different ways to store a wool rug, however, before you do so, we would first recommend cleaning any stains, and giving it a good vacuum so there’s no dirt or debris left in the fibres before you begin. Next you will need to wrap your rug – but remember don’t use plastic! Your wool rug needs to breathe. Instead use a cotton wrap that is strong and lightweight. Avoid any folding when it comes to your beautiful wool rug and roll it instead so as not to flatten the pile.

How to vacuum a wool rug

When it comes to your wool rug, we’d recommend vacuuming at least two to three times a week, or every day if possible! If your vacuum cleaner has brushes, use these initally to help remove any surface fluffing. After that, then a regular vacuumming with a suction only vacuum is best. If you have a wool rug in a high traffic area, such as a doorway or hallway, then this area may need a little more attention and additional passes with the vacuum.

How to clean a wool rug

When it comes to wool carpets, rugs and runners, we recommend only cleaning with products that have the WoolSafe Certification Mark. Remember to always blot and never rub, otherwise you could change the direction of the pile. Never use washing up liquid or soap which is designed for general household use as they could end up causing rapid resoiling, colour bleeding or damage to the pile.

Are wool rugs bad for allergies?

Wool carpets, rugs and runners are considered one of the best fibres for those that might suffer with allergies. You can breathe easy knowing that wools natural air filtering capabilities helps it to trap allergens like dust and pollen. However always best to check with your retail partner about any chemical additions that may have been applied to specific ranges and perhaps even order a larger sample of your favourite wool floor covering before ordering your wool rug.
