Are jute rugs comfortable underfoot?

Jute rugs are one of the most comfortable plant fibres to feel beneath your feet. Your guests will be floored when they walk across a beautifully crafted jute rug with comfort in every step. Not only do they feel great, these sustainable fibres look beautiful and tread lightly on the planet. Available in fine and chunky weaves, including bouclé and herringbone, it’s anti-static properties and soft plant fibre makes jute rugs the perfect choice for your home.

Are jute rugs soft?

Jute rugs are made from naturally soft plant fibres. As part of the process, the cut stalks are tied into bundles and soaked in slow-running water to soften the tissues and break the hard bond between the bast and jute fibres. They are hung to dry and then combed out into long silky string fibres, which are then spun into yarn. Due to the way in which it is crafted, jute has the most gloriously soft and lustrous finish.

When requested, we can apply our environmentally friendly stain inhibitor Intec, which can help to reduce the impact of spillages. Time is of the essence when there are any spills, so be sure to have a WoolSafe approved Natural Flooring Care Kit to hand. This has all natural flooring-friendly products to help keep your jute rug looking it’s best.

What are jute rugs made from?

Jute is a bast fibre; a soft, woody fibre obtained from the stems of flowering plants which have 'net-veined' leaves. Other bast fibres include flax, linen and hemp. Jute fibre can be extremely long, often between 1 and 4 metres; it is soft, shiny and often referred to as the 'golden fibre.' Jute is grown in monsoon climates, during monsoon season and the plants can grow to full length in only 4 to 6 months. Once harvested, the plant stalks are soaked in water to extract the soft jute fibre from within the stem. The extracted jute fibres are then dried, combed and spun into yarn ready to be woven into flooring.

Jute is considered to be one of the most eco friendly fibres; it is not only sustainable, but also renewable, fast to grow, easy to grow and easy to re-grow.
