Will a striped rug make a room look bigger?

When it comes to striped rugs, they can help to create an illusion with their lines. If you’re wanting to make your living room or dining room look a little bigger, try a striped rug with its lines running perpendicular to the long walls of the room. This will have a visually widening effect. If you’re in need of a little floor inspiration, where looking down definitely means perking up, don’t worry, at Alternative Flooring our Floor Gazing section is sure to have what you need to help you choose the right rug with stripes.

What patterns go best with a striped rug?

If you are putting a striped rug on top of a carpet, most of our striped rugs will mix 'n' match with our plain Wool Motown carpets. You can see which stripes match which plains here.

When it comes to mixing and matching soft furnishings with a striped rug, don’t forget to really let your personality shine. The easiest patterns to mix with striped rugs are usually florals, checks and polka dots. Don’t forget you can also experiment with textures and layers too. If you’re a little a little wary of being too bold, then a striped rug is the perfect way to bring in that wow-factor in a more subtle way.

Design your own striped rug

Our easy to use Make Me A Rug designer lets you create our own made to measure striped rug. Custom made and completely personalised, you can create your perfect striped rug today.

How to stop a striped rug from sliding or creeping?

There are many different methods of stopping your striped rug from sliding or creeping on the floor. The best way to hold a rug in place is by using rug underlay. This will help stop your rug from moving on smooth floors or creeping on carpet. Not to mention it will also help reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls. If you need product advice, or inspiration, browse our Help & Advice section now.

How to get a striped rug to lay flat

Sometimes, when a natural striped rug is first unrolled, they can be a little curly and turn up at the corners. This is perfectly normal and usually because the rug has been rolled up tightly post-crafting. This can easily be rectified with a few simple steps. Firstly try “reverse rolling” – essentially rolling the rug the other way and leave the striped rug like this for a couple of days. This should encourage the striped rug to lay flat. However, if it’s being particularly stubborn, get in touch with your local Alternative Retail Partner who will be able to offer you advice and help.

How to clean my striped rug

Our multicoloured striped rugs adds interest to your space while letting you play with colour and scale. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your rug is kept in beautiful condition. Our striped rugs are made from natural fibres such as 100% wool and speed is of the essence when there’s a spill or potential stain.

We recommend only using cleaning products with the WoolSafe Certification Mark on your striped rug. That way you can be reassured that the products have been tried and tested on all delicate, natural rug and carpeting materials. When it comes to striped wool rugs, always blot and never rub, otherwise you run the risk of distorting or changing the direction of the pile. Never use any cleaners that are for household use, such as washing up liquid or soaps as they can cause rapid resoiling or colour bleeding. If you’re ever in any doubt as to what to do, get in contact with a WoolSafe expert.
